Atmospheric square and facade lighting with the modular Lif system luminaire

Place Antonin Poncet
Lyon, France
In the Presqu'île de Lyon district, a peninsula that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is Antonin Poncet Square. From here, you can easily reach the popular Rue des Marronniers, a small pedestrian street known for its many restaurants. The well-frequented square between Place Bellecour and the Rhône has now received new lighting with Selux Lif.
The image of the Antonin Poncet square is characterized by both the preserved bell tower of the former Charité hospital, which was destroyed in 1934, and the Hôtel des Postes. Large lawns and fountains make the square a popular place to spend time, and its distinctive landmark is a work of art by Korean artist Choi Jeong Hwa: a sculpture of a giant bouquet of flowers entitled Flower Tree.
In the past, the square was lit by mercury vapor globe lights. These were not only inefficient, but also caused severe light pollution. So the city of Lyon decided to renew the lighting of the square. The goal was to open up the space, not block the perspectives of the square, improve visual comfort and significantly reduce energy consumption. For the new lighting, the choice fell on Selux Lif with its minimalist design. The pole of this multifunctional luminaire can be flexibly equipped with different modules.
For Antonin Poncet square, the Lif columns are equipped with a backlit openwork module that serves as a light guide at night and helps keep the luminaire column discreet during the day, with its desire for transparency. Lif columns are also equipped with a façade module that softly and subtly illuminates building facades. The golden Tritec reflectors are not only aesthetically pleasing during the day, but also create a warm atmosphere at night, reducing luminance and warming the color temperature and atmosphere of the space. Three different lighting states are available so that lighting can be differentiated depending on the time of night. Programmed power reduction in the middle of the night further reduces the power consumption associated with lighting. The use of LED lighting with a much better luminous efficacy than before and fewer luminaires has made it possible to distribute them more spatially and make the space even freer.
