An attractive location for recreation and leisure time
Project
Citadellskajen
Malmö, Sweden
Citadellskajen Promenade is located in Malmo’s historic city centre. Here, an urban setting has arisen alongside the city’s outer water moat, close to Malmöhus Castle and the King’s Park, that connects Malmo city centre with its western harbour and the district of Ribersborg. With a population of around 300,000, Malmo is Sweden’s third largest city and recently acquired a new, attractive location for recreation and leisure time. Heavy traffic once roared along this road, which is converted to a promenade with a series of green spaces.
At two points on the promenade, jetties provide access to the water while other areas invite passers-by to relax, play games or sports. An even greater variety of ways to spend time by the water is provided by the numerous exercise and leisure facilities such as the outdoor gym. With lighting by Selux and an impressive view of Malmöhus Castle, the outdoor fitness studio in playful yellow is a perfect location to stop at during a night-time run. Lighting designer Johan Moritz from Malmo City Council, has used Olivio Grande luminaires from the Sistema 1 design line here as well as Olivio Piccolo bollards, creating an evening lighting ambience in which people can feel secure and at ease. To avoid direct glare, some of the luminaire heads have been fitted with a honeycomb louvre in a confident design that at the same time makes the Olivio a key design element in this new urban setting.
Designed by edge Landscape Architects, the promenade incorporates both a functional pedestrian walkway as well as a natural designed location for the citizens of Malmo to spend their time in.
