Gothenburg’s second largest transport interchange after its main train station is called Gamlestaden. Located between the inner city and its north-eastern urban areas, it acts as a gateway to the city centre for day commuters, many of whom travel a part of their journey by bicycle. To encourage them to do this, a parking facility specially for bicycles and e-bikes has been erected here where commuters can park their bicycles for the day on three storeys conveniently and safely. The bicycle station contains more than 600 parking spaces and also includes a service station with a pump and tools.

The futuristic architecture of the bicycle facility radiates clarity and security, culminating at its apex, which also marks the building entrance. With its perforated walls, its façade has an almost transparent effect, lending the parking facility a feeling of lightness. The lighting concept by Sweco Architects utilises the visibility of the hollow spaces, so that in darkness the building is illuminated like a dazzling lantern. The urban surroundings of the parking facility are lit using Olivio luminaires with two, three or four luminaire heads arranged around a pole to generate atmospheric light. Both the natural lighting of the square and that of the building turn this new bicycle parking facility into a new, lively landmark for the city of Gothenburg.
