Illumination of the paths at Königsstuhl National Park Visitor Center
Sassnitz, Germany
The chalk cliffs along the northeastern coast of Rügen, an island in the Baltic Sea, are truly picturesque. The most famous of these is the Königsstuhl, a towering chalk cliff standing 118 meters high, which lends its name to the recently modernized National Park Visitor Center.
The Königsstuhl National Park Visitor Center offers visitors unique nature experiences. An interactive exhibition takes them on a journey through the history of Jasmund National Park, while a fully accessible, suspended viewing platform provides breathtaking views of the landscape.
A skywalk above the famous Königsstuhl chalk cliff offers visitors stunning views of the neighboring cliffs and the surrounding Stubbenkammer coastal area. The approximately 185-meter-long, elliptical walkway hovers above the Königsstuhl, supported by a massive guyed mast. The previous viewpoint was closed to protect the cliff from erosion, making this new structure a sustainable alternative. Additionally, the modernized exhibition on Jasmund National Park – home to UNESCO World Heritage-listed beech forests – has reopened. The outdoor area features themed adventure stations, a playground, and rest areas, making it a great experience for both young and old.
In nature reserves, thoughtful use of lighting is crucial to preserving the surrounding flora and fauna, as well as protecting the night sky. For the outdoor lighting at the National Park Center, Lif columns were selected, providing security with a top element, camera mounting, and a Twinspot module at the ticket area. Along the path to the viewing platform above the Königsstuhl, more than 40 Inula bollards light the way with focused, stray light-free illumination. These Dark Sky-certified cylindrical luminaires create a pleasant atmosphere, highlighting the natural beauty of Rügen's chalk cliffs.
