Light in Harmony with Nature: Illuminating the Surroundings of Esterházy Winery with Dynamic Lighting

Trausdorf an der Wulka, Austria

Esterházy Winery is a historic institution in Austria. The Hungarian Prince Esterházy served under the Austrian Emperor in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and was granted lands by the Emperor as a token of appreciation for his services and loyalty. The vineyards of the estate originated from this historical transfer. Today, the name Esterházy is synonymous with organically grown wines, and the oak barrels used for the red wines are sourced from the estate’s own forests.

The proximity to adjacent nature reserves played a central role in the lighting design for the surroundings of Esterházy Winery: In consideration of the flora and fauna, the lighting for the newly designed visitor car park had to meet the needs of both nature and humans, ensuring a balance between the two.

The goal was to ensure safety for people through uniform and standard-compliant lighting, without disrupting the flight of insects or the natural rhythms of insects, animals, and plants.

Recent scientific studies show that many insect families lack red-light receptors in the long-wavelength spectrum. A paradigm shift towards warm or red light sources can provide enough light for the human eye while simultaneously protecting insects. On the other hand, cool light, predominantly made up of short-wavelength radiation, is efficient and allows us to extend the daylight period energy-efficiently for humans during the colder months from autumn to winter. For this reason, Aya lights were chosen, combined with the Circular Light Profile ›Biological White‹.

Background

Aya, in combination with our scientifically grounded Circular Light Profiles, brings the needs of both humans and nature into harmony in a resource-efficient manner. Circular Light Profiles enable tailor-made, sustainable lighting for every community, for every location.

The ›Biological White‹ Circular Light Profile combines safety with nature and insect protection by adjusting both the light colour and intensity of the luminaire throughout the year, depending on insect activity. In the summer, when insects are active, a very warm, insect-friendly colour temperature of 2200 Kelvin is used. In the colder months, when no insects are active, the more energy-efficient 3000 Kelvin colour temperature is employed to reduce energy consumption.

Aya blends seamlessly into the landscape with its elegant silhouette, featuring soft contours. Its low-profile optics, housing shape, and light exit surface are designed to maximise light usage while avoiding light pollution – ideal for nature-oriented lighting at Esterházy Winery.
