Scientific study proves the effectiveness of insect-friendly lighting
24 June 2024
In collaboration with the Leibnitz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) and the Technical University of Berlin, Selux has developed a luminaire model that significantly reduces the attraction of flying insects. This is shown by the IGB's scientific study on the flight behavior of insects on lighting fixtures.
The new Tal Shield luminaires were tested in two experiments: firstly in a controlled test field and secondly on streets in three municipalities. These are individually adapted luminaires that only emit light onto the target area and reduce stray light. In addition, a customized shield makes the light source almost invisible outside the illuminated area. The results show that these innovative luminaires attract fewer insects than various conventional luminaires with the same illuminance. The publication points to the great potential of spatially optimized lighting to mitigate the global insect decline without compromising human safety.
